The Blind Musician’s Collective is Proud to Present Top Acts at the NYC Shrine Bar, 3-26-2010 - March 11, 2010

The Blind Musician’s Collective is Proud to Present Top Acts at the NYC Shrine Bar, 3-26-2010
The Blind Musician’s Collective is Proud to Present Top Acts at the NYC Shrine Bar, 3-26-2010

The Blind Musicians Collective of NYC (BEAM NYC) will be presenting acclaimed artists Lachi, Los Ciegos Del Barrio and emerging group Dreadbeat Dadz in
concert on Friday March 26 at 8pm for a premier showcase. The showcase will be held at the popular Shrine bar on 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd, NY,

(PRWEB) March 10, 2010 -- When thinking of a blind musician, we imagine an African-American male with dark glasses on a piano singing R&B, and though Stevie
Wonder and Ray Charles have had their heyday as noteworthy, superb blind musicians in the past, a new wave of modern, hardworking, extremely talented and
diverse visually impaired musicians have materialized at the commercial level in NYC and around the globe representing everything from Singer-songwriter
and Rock to Latin and Ska. Yes, blind individuals have a certain stigma within society of being dependent, feeble and inane; however, the mission of the
Blind Musicians Collective is not only to empower its musicians through fellowship and networking, but to promote them through performance opportunities,
and showcases, in order to dismiss misconceptions. Unlike the organizations of today who claim to aid blind individuals but are bogged down by politics
disorganization and an inability to truly relate, the Collective is set forth for and complete run and supported by highly educated, hardworking, professional
blind musicians in the music industry at a grassroots, realistic and synergetic level.

On March 26th BEAM will showcase some of NYC’s top talents, including the buzzing Rock Songstress, Lachi (and her all blind band) who’s recently signed
a record deal with Fanatic Records (EMI/Capitol) and is showcasing at the South By South West 2010 Music Conference in Austin TX; well-established, high-energy,
multigenre Latin band Los Ciegos Del Barrio who’ve recently released the successful "Por Que? Porque!" album, and the up-and-coming Ska Punk band Dreadbeat

Some may wrongly assume that these artists are just as good as any other artists out there, yet the only difference is that they are blind. However, these
artists are exceptionally above average; their music and performance chops are impeccable, and their diligence and business savvy are just as impressive.
Expect a stellar, talent-filled line up at Harlem’s own Shrine Bar, popular for its rich musical showcase experiences, well-priced drinks and great food!
There is no cover at the door; however, donations are highly appreciated.

Band member wins 2009 Independent Music Award. - January 27, 2010

Original band member/percussionist Jimmy Fontanez has won the judges' selection for a 2009 Independent Music Award for his song "Mi Salsa Vocal". This song has been featured on our interview on German Santana's "Caribe Latino" show on 89.9 WKCR FM in New York City. We are very proud of Jimmy and he deserves all the credit for writing such a wonderful song. You can listen to his song here: This will be the first of many accomplishments for Jimmy and we are always happy when one of our team members wins such an award.
Jimmy Fontanez, a friend of most of the band since childhood, joined "Los Ciegos Del Barrio" when the band first started in 1997. Shortly afterwards, he left New York City to hone his percussive skills with a Salsa band in Amsterdam/Albany New York now called the "Alex Torres Orchestra". Jimmy continued to write, record and produce his own music in his own home studio. He also continued to be active with "Los Ciegos Del Barrio" even while living upstate. In 2009, Jimmy expanded his music career by joining an alternative rock group with "Lachi", another visually impaired artist from Brooklyn New York ( ) who has since befriended and assisted "Los Ciegos Del Barrio" through the use of her own marketing skills and knowledge of social media. She is also a good friend of Jimmy's. Jimmy joined the Visionary Media Company" in 2009 and collaborated, either through performance, or production with several artists for an upcoming compilation CD called "Songs About Blindness" which is to be released in 2010. He moved back down to New York City in January 2010 as he parted ways with the "Alex Torres Orchestra" as he has now become increasingly active with "Lachi", "Los Ciegos Del Barrio", "The Visionary Media Company" and his own budding music career. "Mi Salsa Vocal", to date, is his most popular solo original song and has enjoyed a huge amount of success. He is very well supported by his friends and fans and we are so happy to have him back in town. In January 2010, jimmy officially won the "Latin song category" for the "Independent Music Awards", which is only a small indication of how much he is starting to realize his potential as an artist.
We support our member/friend and the sky is the limit for Jimmy as there is so much more to accomplish. Welcome home, Jimmy and welcome to the wonderful world of music success and appreciation.

"Yo Volvere" hits #17 on Garage Band. - September 29, 2009

Off the recent success of our song "Ciegueton", "Yo Volvere" has now hit #17 on's Latin chart surpassing "Ciegueton" which is currently sitting at #19. We are thrilled to have had both of our contest entries voted on favorably by the artist community on that site. We thank the GarageBand community for giving us props. We are also happy for Machete who co-wrote the song and we thank his uncle Marto Batista for writing such a beautiful song. for those familiar with the song, it's actually Marto's voice you hear in the beginning as excerpts of the original 1980's version is interjected throughout the song. Thanks so much to all involved.

"Yo Volvere" wins track of the week for week beginning September 7th on! - September 5, 2009

As our track "Ciegueton" continues to climb the Latin chart in, now standing at #13, another song has started to make a few waves. "Yo Volvere (Homenaje A Savana Iglesia)" is now sitting at #46 in the same chart. Because of some enthusiastic reviews by the artist community on that site, this track has won the "track of the week" honors for Latin music for the upcoming week. We are particularly happy because it is the first underground hit for any song performed by "Machete". This song was actually written by his uncle in the Dominican Republic about the town from which Machete's family was born. The song was written in the early 1980's and was actually recorded by Machete's uncle "Marto Batista" and recorded as a limited edition single that was only available in the town of Savana Iglesia in the Dominican Republic. So as we set out to record this album, Machete, in collaboration with Alvin Suarez, arranged a more modern version of the song which has received so many positive reviews. In fact, Machete even features several interjections on that track from the original single. On the album version of the song, you can hear a soundbyte of Marto singing and playing his guitar before Los Ciegos comes in. You can then hear Marto (On the album version and the radio version.) interjected again toward the coda of the song. So we congratulate Marto and Machete for their wonderful contribution to our album. We are always proud of our music, but this one, in particular, feels really good. We thank the artist community at for their support of this song as well as "Ciegueton". If you want to check out, click here:
Thanks to all. (Alvin)

"Ciegueton" wins Latin Track of the Week on "". - August 5, 2009

We were notified via e mail today that our song "Ciegueton" debuted at #51 on the Latin chart on Garage As a result of a number of enthusiastic reviews by the artist community on that site, the song has won Latin track of the week and will be featured as such from August 10 to 17, 2009. We are very proud of this accomplishment and it is always rewarding to know that our hard work and creativity is being acknowledged...especially by other artists. We thank all of us musicians that participated on that song as well as engineers Henrique Gil and Jose Guevara for recording the track. We also want to send a very special thank you for Jimmy Fontanez for his production input on that song. He plays with us, but also worked very hard on that song with the assistance of "Machete". We are all very proud of our band as well as that song. The irony is that the song actually pokes fun at the Reggaeton market a bit, yet it is looking like a huge success for us. We also thank our fans and supporters for believing that we are in fact the best damn Latin group coming out of NYC! Thank you all so much. We have not fallen off and thanks to all of you, we never will. A free download will be made available at until the end of next week.

Listen to us on "Champagne Sundays". - July 22, 2009

Check out Alvin Suarez of Los Ciegos Del Barrio on an on line radio interview this Sunday, July 26 from 2PM to 3PM as he discusses Los Ciegos' experience with the "Sounds in Sight" compilation in 2007. For those who are unfamilliar, "Sounds in Sight" was a compilation CD sponsord by the National Federation of the Blind's Performing Arts Division that featured various blind artists from across the country. We were honored to be part of that with our single "Brown Eyed Girl". The link to the radio show is
Lisa Smith is the host of the show which is part of "Big Blend" Magazine. We thank our friend Donna W. Hill for setting that up. We hope you check it out.

Thanks to all that sign the guestbook. - July 22, 2009

We appreciate all the feedback whether positive or negative. (Of course we remember you, Patty!) Our apologies to everyone for the constant spam that is received in our guestbook. We work hard to make sure we can minimize it as much as possible. There is a measure we can use to eliminate it totally where one would have to verify their signing of our guestbook by typing in a series of letters before sending the message, but we've declined to use that feature as it is not accessible for the blind. So we'd rather chase the spam away than alienate any of our fan base. Hopefully, our webhosts will find an accessible way to offer the verification feature as soon as possible. We have raised that concern to them already. is now up and running. - July 22, 2009

There have been some concerns raised by those who do not speak Spanish fluently that they would love to visit our site, but they either do not remember the full name of the band, or they do not know the correct spelling. Some have even said that the name is too long for them to remember so we have solved that problem...we think. You can now use as the URL to visit our website. Feel free to pass it along. The original URL is still active, but now there are choices as both URLs will take you to the same place. We will also try to post more information and e mails in Spanish as it has also been a concern for many people. Namely those who speak limited English. We value each and every one of our fans and the more we can accomodate all of you, the better it is for all of us. We thank you for your support.

"¿Por Que? ¡Porque…!" is now available on line. - June 27, 2009

Thanks to the good folks at DigStation, we now have our first on line retailer to carry our brand new album. You can buy a whole CD with all 10 tracks for $9.99, or you can download individual tracks for only 99 cents. Soon, we'll have another link on our home page that you can just click on where it will take you to our main on line retailer "CD Baby", but for now, you can just go to our website and click on the "Buy" link and it will provide you with a safe and secure link to DigStation. We thank Oasis CD for setting it up for us. Please note that the title of the CD is exactly the way it's written here, but for some reason, DigStation incorrectly spells it "Por Que? Perque...! which is not right, but we'll get it straightened out soon hopefully. We also have some more shows and appearances that are coming together including in New York City so stay in touch with us and we'll let you know. Thank you so much for your support and also feel free to join our mailing list and sign our guestbook. We are also on My Space if that's your thing. Send us a friend request, read our blogs, leave comments or just listen to our music. Stay tuned as there is much more to come.
